Zirkle Landing in Pierce County, Georgia

Zirkle, Georgia does not exist today. Before 1926, Zirkle was the second largest town in Pierce County. It had a sawmill and more than 300 workers who processed lumber every day. There were stores and homes. In 1926 the saw mill closed production and the town was no more. Zirkle’s population went to zero. Slowly the community went back to nature as the vegetation took over the buildings and evidence of the town disappeard.*

We went to Zirkle back in March and the pictures below are the way we saw the river. We were not sure if we were at the correct place according to the photos of the dam that we had seen. We were told to go back in hotter weather and look again. We took the opportunity in July and the above photos are the scenes we saw.

Author note: According to family history passed down through the generations, our grandmother, Sarah Saphronia Caldwell Gill moved from Savannan to Zirkle where she lived as she raised her children, after her husband went off to the Civil War. I also heard she ran a boarding house.

We hope you enjoyed looking at the photos of Zirkle.

* I had read these facts online in March, but of course, I could not find the article now to give the person credit. I believe it was Jason Deal. I summarized the information in my words.
